Being one of the first American dog breeds to be recognized internationally, the Boston Terrier is a small dog with a compact body, erect ears and short tail. Also proclaimed the American Gentleman, this breed is extremely friendly and yet stubborn and intelligent, and has an average life span of more than 15 years.

In terms of physical appearance, these dogs have a large and flat head without any wrinkles. They have a wide and flat snout and large nose, wide set eyes and erect ears. Their body is stocky and muscular and they have a short yet stubby tail. The legs of the Boston Terrier are all straight and in proper proportion with the rest of the body. Their coat fur is short, thin and fine and does not shed much, which is a definite boon to the owner. The best part of these dogs is that they are extremely friendly and easy going while adapting to all kinds of situations.

The coat of the Boston Terrier, as mentioned earlier, is short, fine and thin and usually comes in brown and white or black and white colors. In some cases, colors like brindle, seal and white, red and white, or even liver, cream or brown with white can be seen. However, these colors are rarer than the other colors. It is interesting to note that the amount of white in a Boston Terrier usually differs from one dog to another, where one can have more of it as compared to the other. However, as per usual standards, the white part of the fur is usually restricted to the neck, middle of the face, nose or muzzle, and chest. In some cases, these dogs may have white paws. Thanks to having a short and fine coat, these dogs do not shed as much as other breeds and are easy to groom. Grooming often means occasional brushing of their coats, apart from including cleaning their faces with a damp cloth daily and regular clipping of their nails.

When it comes to temperament, the Boston Terrier is a breed that is warm, extremely loving and caring. These dogs are always ready to please humans. These are fantastic dogs as pets, easy with kids and the elderly. While they are friendly to strangers, they are excellent watch dogs as well, barking only when necessary. While they do not get mad or upset very fast, these dogs tend to walk away instead of reacting adversely. These are extremely sensitive dogs, often reacting to your harsh voice or tone. Therefore, when training them, it is important to keep your voice even. Since Boston Terriers are extremely intelligent dogs, they are very easy to train. They love to learn and do so very fast. However, it is not easy to housebreak these dogs, despite their fast learning. When training your pet Boston Terrier, make sure that you do not spend long hours training it as the dog has a tendency to get bored. Moreover, make sure that you reward your pet with praises and rewards, as nothing pleases it to learn more than appreciation.

Boston Terriers are great dogs for those who live in apartments as they do not require much in terms of exercise. While they tend to love going out for long walks, interactive play with their owners is enough exercise for this breed. Make sure that you do not over exercise your pet as they are not adaptable to extremes in temperature.
