The Borzois - also known as the Russian wolfhound, are akin to Greyhounds in size and shape. These excellent domestic dogs are known for their beauty as well as temperament. The Borzois are great dogs for those with large space to accommodate them. As a very tall dog, this breed commands attention as well as appreciation.
The head of this breed is long, thin and narrow with an arched muzzle. This breed has oblong shaped eyes that are dark in color. However, the main characteristic of this breed is the tail, which is long, curved and hangs low. Moreover, the coat is thick and ruffled, which gives the dog a completely unique look. Given these basic characteristics, it is hardly surprising that this is one of the most beautiful breeds in dogs.
The coat of a Borzoi is completely unique, silky, rich and wavy. In fact, the coat hair ends in curls, which create a completely beautiful look. Overall, the coat can be considered long and heavy with an additional thicker layer around the neck, which makes it look like fur, creating an impression of big shoulders. The coat comes in different colors - almost all kinds of colors, and is thick during winters while the dog tends to shed it during summers. Common colors include black, tan, white, tan or grey with white markings, golden etc.
In terms of temperament, these are extremely affectionate and loyal dogs, which are also proud and intelligent. Their innate intelligence makes them great learners but their independent nature and free will might cause difficulty while training. Gentle and firm training that is consistent is absolutely essential while training a Borzoi. It is important that as an owner, you set the rules and prove yourself as the leader before actually training your dog.
These are extremely quiet dogs, rarely known for their barking. As they belong to the sight hound category, they are extremely fast runners but have no instinct with regard to territory. In other words, if they catch sight of a smaller animal, they will take after it immediately and might not heed to your shouts. However, in general, they are good with other pets in the household but might require supervision. It is important to instill socializing skills earlier in their lives, as this will give them chance to adjust with other animals. Whilst they are good companion dogs, their instincts are that of hound, which is why they might not be the best companion in a household with small children.
Borzois are perhaps the only breed that loves to take care of itself. Therefore, grooming a Borzoi is extremely easy as it will volunteer and help in remaining clean. Grooming a Borzoi includes brushing its long coat regularly. While weekly brushing is good, it is advisable to do it more often when possible. Moreover, while taking care of your Borzoi, make sure that you trim the hair around its feet, especially between its toes so that it doesn’t hurt the dog.
Running is absolutely essential for a Borzoi. Hence, you should ensure that you have a play area where your dog can run, even when it is small. It is important to have a strict play time to spend with your dog and ensure that its exercising needs are looked after.
