The pain of skin allergies

Skin allergies, or dermatitis, can affect both the pet and the owner, with constant scratching, biting and licking frustrating both. These are one of the trickiest problems to diagnose in dogs as they can have many causes and the problem is usually worsened with the scratching and licking by the animal.

Infectious dermatitis results in sticky, inflamed skin lesions and hair loss and is caused by bacteria, fungi or yeast organisms which spread rapidly and can be transferred by licking and scratching. One of the most common reactions known as ringworm is caused by Microsporum canis resulting in easily recognizable circular hair loss. Infectious dermatitis is usually treated with clipping the hair at the infected site and applications of topical medications and the prescription of oral antibiotics to fight the underlying bacteria. Antihistamines and cortisone may also be given to suppress the itching.

Environmental dermatitis is caused by environmental factors such as soil, swimming pool chemicals and even lawn grasses while Nutritional dermatitis occurs as a result of inadequate nutrition and is common amongst pets that are fed with cheap brands of dog food that do not supply sufficient nutrition.

Allergic dermatitis can be triggered by many allergens, including food ingredients, synthetic and natural fibers, medications, plants and dust and dust mites. Allergies can be diagnosed through blood and skin tests to determine the exact cause and proper treatment necessary.
