Ear infections and ear mites can be beaten

Ear infections and an infestation of ear mites can be troublesome and lead to a restless and unhappy pet. These infections are usually curable with proper veterinary care, but can lead to serious damage and permanent hearing loss if left untreated. Symptoms usually include shaking and scratching at the ears and may become inflamed and have a foul odour or discharge.

There are two common types of ear infections in dogs: Otitis externa and Otitis Media. Otitis externa is an infection of the external ear canal and is usually caused by bacteria or yeast, but can manifest due to accumulated ear wax or a foreign body in the ear. Otitis Media occurs when an infection from the external ear canal spreads to the middle ear and is usually caused by debris or incorrect ear cleaning. Occassionally, ear infections can occur as a result of allergies or thyroid disease.

Ear mites are fast spreading mites that infect the dog’s ears. Without treatment, usually in the form of a medicated ointment, can cause severe problems and spread to other pets in the household. Many mites have become resistant to the chemicals in over-the-counter ointments, such as thiabendazole and pyrethins, and a preparation from your vet is recommended to ensure the mites do not spread.

Dogs that sport long pendulous ears and those with hairy inner ear flaps are more prone to ear infections than other breeds.
