Bonding with dogs

Every time my daughter sees the puppies for sale, she jumps in joy at the thought of her own dog. However, I am a little reluctant to get a new puppy home now, largely because I feel that she is too young to understand the true responsibility of having a dog at home. Are you sailing in the same boat and having to disappoint your little angel in the dog department? Well, here is something I learnt that I would like to share. Children are never too young for dogs and by having dogs at a young age, they actually grow up to become more mature and responsible adults. However, it is important to understand that there are certain things you should take care of if you are planning to get a new pup home. You would need to make small changes in your household to make sure that your pup settles in properly and starts responding well to you and your family.

The first thing you should remember is that the pup will be a pet for the entire family. So, it is important to get all family members involved in planning for the arrival of your pet right from the beginning. If you are planning to get pups from a shelter, it is best to spend time in advance with the dog, while waiting for the final adoption formalities to realize. This will help set the stage for correct bonding with the pup.

Just like children, puppies are wary of harsh or raised voices. Therefore, it is important that you discuss with your family the need to be quiet so as to ensure your pet settles in well. It is important that during the initial stages, you do not scream or shout at one another but sort things out in a normal voice in order to allow your dog to trust you.

Creating a routine and sticking to it is very important and helps in building a lasting bond with your pet. Moreover, routines help in dog training, which should start right from the beginning, especially if you want a well behaved dog. Setting a routine means fixing the time you go out with your pup, fixing the time it eats the food and the like so that your pet gets comfortable with you and your family.

It is important to understand that the dog is an extended part of your family. So, treat your pet like one. Make sure that all family members pitch in to do their bit in ensuring the pet is happy and healthy. Little children and dogs bond very easily and it is important to nurture their bonding. However, it is important to add here that certain dog breeds are not as friendly as others, which in turn makes a little parental supervision inevitable to ensure proper bonding between dogs and children, and making sure that neither is hurt.

Lastly, when you have a dog, you need to plan your outings in such a way that the new pup does not feel left out. This is a very important part of bonding between the dog and the family. Always ensure that the dog is well cared for, in case you have to leave him or her alone for a certain period of time.
So, keep the points as mentioned above in mind while bonding with dogs.
